Starlee
Itâs rough getting up the next day after coming home so late, but I do get both Jake and Dexter to the car on time. Dex passes me a mocha and a day-old Lucifer lemon bar and Jake crawls in the back, quickly falling back asleep for the ride down the mountain.
Thereâs an odd buzz, along with a huge banner, when we walk in the front door.
HoCo 2019-Masquerade.
âWhatâs a Hoco?â I ask Jake. Dexter heads to the office to give them an update on George.
âItâs the catchy way to say Homecoming.â
âAh.â Shit. Homecoming. One of those rites of passage Iâve always dreamed of, except now I donât have one possible date but four. How the hell do we navigate that?
Another sign accosts me by the lockers.
Vote for King and Queen!
âHow does this vote work?â I open up my locker and glance at Jake, whoâs leaning against the locker next to mine.
âHomerooms pick a guy and a girl to represent. Then itâs narrowed down from there in a school-wide vote.â He doesnât seem too interested. He should be. Thereâs zero chance heâs not a finalist in a popularity contest. âThey announce it at the football game.â
âGotcha,â I say, not sure how I feel about it all. Itâs all the social pressures coming together at once. Lucky for me, no one else is that interested in homecoming and just want to know more about George.
âHeâs doing okay,â Jake says to a few guys that pass us in the hall. âI think heâll come home today.â
âConcussion?â a big guy asks. Big is an understatement. Heâs massive.
âProbably.â
âYou think heâs out for the season?â
âIâd count on it.â
We all know itâs not a huge loss to the teamâGeorge wasnât a starting playerâbut heâs popular too. Funny and goofy. Known for his artistic skills. No one wants to hear heâs out.
âIâll know more later today,â Jake says, bumping fists with the other guy. âIâll update everyone at practice.â
I watch him, not fully aware of the smile on my mouth until he raises an eyebrow. âWhat?â I ask.
âWhat are you smiling about?â
âIâm just happy you guys have each other and Iâm a little jealous of the friends youâve made.â
âStarlee, weâve lived here our whole life. Tyler and I have played football together since we were six. Thereâs no other options.â
âItâs still cute.â
He leans against the locker and gives me a deadly, sexy grin. âYou think Iâm cute?â
âStop. Iâm not flattering you. Your head is big enough already.â
âToo late. I already heard you say it.â
My heart thuds in my chest and I tear my eyes away from his. Why did he have to be so handsome and charming and perfect?
âIâll see you later, okay?â he says.
âYeah, and we need to work on that project you have due Friday, right?â
âTonight? After dinner?â
âYep.â
He winks and pushes off the wall and strolls down the hallway, a few of his teammates falling in step.
I close my locker door and turn, coming face-to-face with Claire.
âHey,â I say, holding my books to my chest. âWhatâs
